Sony Launches Official eSports League Platform For PlayStation 4

It appears that Sony is looking to grab a slice of the eSports pie, which comes as no surprise. With the success of games such as League of Legends and Dota 2, it was only a matter of time before one of the console manufacturers decided to take the plunge. According to Spanish website Gamereactor, Sony revealed the PlayStation Official League, an eSports platform for the PlayStation 4, at a press event held at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Spain.

Players will be able to win individual and team prizes by playing games such as Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, War Thunder and FIFA 15, with more supported IPs on the way. The concept behind this eSports league is that there will be “seasons” during which players will build up their ranks, with PSN tracking points, over a set number of months. At the end of the allotted period, the players will then receive rewards and then start all over again when a new season starts.

The service will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers and will be available in Spain starting on October 16. While there are plans to expand the PlayStation Official League to Portugal and Italy soon, no information was provided about when it might make its way to the United States.

According to Gamereactor, the first season starts on October 16, 2015 and will end January 11, 2016.
