At first, it was only confirmed for selective Sony, HTC and Motorola devices, but according to sources familiar with SamMobile, Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update by December.
Earlier this month, there was a leaked video which suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 was running Android L. If the news of it coming out in December is true, then Android lovers can be rest assured of some interesting features to be added to their devices.Android Lollipop 5.0 is supposedly the biggest update to Android since the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Android 5.0 also brings in a few other features such as material design, multiple device compatibility, lockscreen notifications, support for 64-bit processor along with file sharing through Android Beam. It is also expected that the battery life on Samsung Galaxy S5 will see some improvements with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
As seen in the video above, Samsung hasn’t given up on its TouchWiz UI. However, there are several similarities between Google’s Android L and what Samsung’s device is running. While Samsung’s built-in apps have been designed to follow the Material Design guidelines, the Settings menu is now white and not blue. Samsung’s lock screen shows only two notifications, compared to four seen in the stock Android OS. Samsung has also built a clipboard tool for history of screenshots and copied text, a feature usually available in custom ROMs.
Motorola has confirmed the Android 5.0 update to a majority of its phones available in the market, including the Moto X (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.), Moto G (1st Gen. & 2nd Gen.), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini. Sony’s Z series smartphones and tablets will be among the first devices to receive the update. “We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android L upgrade available for the entire premium Z series: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.” Sony announced on its website. The Sony Android 5.0 update will only come out in early 2015.
