HTC is rumoured to be making a new Nexus 9 tablet, codenamed 'Volantis' which could be the last Nexus tablet from Google instead of the Nexus 8. It might arrive this month with Android L and a new 'sand' colour to go on sale 3 November. Here's what you need to know about the rumoured Nexus 9 release date, price and specs. Updated on 13/10/14See alsoThe best tablets of 2014: What's the best tablet in the UK right now?
We've got plenty of rumours surrounding the Nexus 6Nexus 8 and a new Nexus 10 but a new tablet is on the cards. According to Android Police, HTC is working on a Nexus 9 device which could be the last Nexus tablet from Google becuase of Android Silver. It's up the air whether Google will launch a Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 but we don't expect both to arrive so our money is on one or the other.

Google Nexus 9: Leaked

The image above is the best looking leak we've seen of the Nexus 9 and it comes via upleaks which calls it the 'T1'. As you can see it has a very similar style and design to the Nexus 7 with the Nexus logo printed on the back which appears to have the same matt finish plastic rear cover.
It also wields the HTC logo putting more weight on the One M8 maker partnering with Google for this device. The shape also suggests a possible aspect ratio of 4:3 like the iPad mini which would be a departure from 16:9 as found on the Nexus 7.

Google Nexus 9: Release date

Google was expected to launch a new product at Google I/O back in June, but a Nexus 9 or any other tablet was a no-show. It's likely that the Nexus 9 will be the vehicle on which Google launches Android L in the coming weeks, unless the firm goes for the Nexus 8.
Android Police pegs the Nexus 9 for a Q4 2014 release adding that it will be the launch device for Android L. This is looking more and more likely with nVidia confirming in a document (a lawsuit against Samsung and Qualcomm which has been pulled from the net) that the "HTC Nexus 9, expected in the third quarter of 2014, is also expected to use the Tegra K1."
Android Authority has reported that Android L will be launched on 15 or 16 October alongside the Nexus 9 and possible other Nexus devices. The latest tip-off comes from TK Tech News, which claims sources are saying the Nexus 9 will be here within a week, although no evidence is given.
A report from Bright Side of News states that Google will put the Nexus 9 up for pre-order on 15 October with it set to go on sale 3 November.
We're yet to hear from Google about it so stayed tuned.

Google Nexus 9: Price

In terms of price, the Nexus 9 is expected to fetch $399 for the cheapest model. The 32GB edition will be $499 and LTE connectivity is a possibility, too. We expect it to be cheaper than £399 in the UK.
The above report from Bright side of news also touts $399 and says the Nexus 9 won't be exclusive to the Google Play store and will be available at 'most major retailers'.

Google Nexus 9: Specs

The specs of the Nexus 9 vary from rumour to rumour and we've been sent the below shot supposedly revealing what the tablet will offer in terms of hardware. This is by no means genuine and strangely doesn't give much detail about the screen. It's the first time we've seen mention of a new colour called 'sand'.
Nexus 9 specs

The Nexus 9, known as 'Volantis' in codename form, will feature an 8.9in display with a 2048 x 1440 resolution (that's 281ppi). It will be powered by an nVidia Logan Tegra K1 64-bit processor along with 2GB of RAM. Storage will be either 16- or 32GB and like other Nexus devices, there's no word on a microSD card slot.
TK Tech News has leaked the following CPU-Z information for the Nexus 9, plus Antutu benchmarks.

Cameras are reported to be 8Mp at the rear with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and 3Mp at the front. The leaked image at the top of the page shows an LED flash.
Remains specs are design-related and show that the Nexus 9 is thinner than the Nexus 7 at 7.87mm and will weigh 418g. It will use a 'zero-gap' aluminium construction and have front-facing stereo speakers. You can see the Android Police's own render based on the source information.
A new leak from TK Tech News suggests the Nexus 9 will come with a Type Cover.
