It seems that Amazon is having a push with new products in the lead up to Christmas with the Fire TV and Fire Phonearriving in the UK. The firm has also announced new Kindle eReaders and new Kindle HD tablets.
"The team has packed an incredible amount of technology and innovation into the new Fire HDX—an incredible HDX display, a powerful quad-core processor, a 70% faster graphics engine, exceptional audio, and faster Wi-Fi—and it’s still startlingly light," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. "Fire HDX combines excellent hardware with exclusive features and services from Fire OS 4 including Firefly, the Mayday button, Family Library, ASAP and more."

New Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (2014): Specs and new features

The new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 may look very similar to the previous generation and Amazon's other tablets but it has various upgrades. It's lighter and faster, being one of the only devices we've seen with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. As we've already mentioned, it comes in a 4G model and improved wireless with 802.11ac MIMO (multiple input, multiple output).

On top of hardware improvements, the new Fire HDX comes with Fire OS 4 'Sangria' software (based on Android) which has some new features including unlimited cloud storage for Amazon content and photos taken on the device. A new feature called ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction) learns what movies and shows you like and gets them ready for you to watch to avoid buffering. See also: Group test: what's the best Android tablet?
Second Screen headphone integration lets you watch Amazon Instant Video on the big-screen and listen to the sound privately by plugging headphones into the Fire HD. You can also cast or fling content to your TV if you have the Fire TV, PlayStation 3/4 or a Samsung TV.
Other new features includes profiles for up to two adults and four children and Family Library (which will launch later this year) allowing customers to link two Amazon account to share content.
Lastly is increased power efficiency including Touch Boost to automatically increase the performance of the CPU. FirePower with SmartSuspend learns when to turn off wireless connectivity and maximise standby battery life – similar to Sony's Stamina mode.
Also available for the Fire HD are new accessories, including a new protective cover and a number of adapters for connecting the tablet to a TV or monitor. They include HDMI, VGA and USB.
